Mike says a lot of people know him as “Nick the plumber” because he worked in HVAC Nootbaar almost 10 years. “Many people may not have known his name, but recognized his smile and his little white truck pictures of herself parachuting,” said Mike. “Nick was always the first person to stop and help when you need it, without ever asking anything in return.”

Those in the skydiving community know him and his funny antics well. Always the joker, Nick is a beloved tandem instructor, AFF instructor, military parachute trainer and freefall videographer at Perris Valley Drop Zone. He participated in many group jumps and had many opportunities to travel and work doing what he loved, accumulating more than 4,500 jumps.

On May 22, Lindsay wrote in her blog that Nick’s vitals were stable and he was sleeping peacefully. In a second surgery, doctors put a rod in his back and fused his L4 and L5 vertebrae. She learned there was visible damage to his nerves that extend below his spinal cord and was told his nerves appeared to be so damaged he was not expected to have motor/sensory function below his knees.

But Lindsay noted he had been moving his legs and had feeling everywhere except the big toe side of his feet and the bottoms of his feet, so she’s optimistic that doctors are wrong. His spleen had been removed in an earlier surgery on Friday.

Wednesday, Lindsay wrote, “He’s still sedated today, but stirring a little bit. He has acknowledged my voice a few times. Not much has changed. I saw his abdomen today without the dressing on it. What a beautiful sign of healing! His mom, Sandee, was just elated . . .”

She continued, “There are 20-30 staples from his nipples down to his pubic area. It’s going to be a gnarly scar alright. And most importantly, they lined his tattoo up properly and it wasn’t affected at all! I totally expected it to read “Adrealin Jukie,” but it’s fine. Really, I know, that is certainly not the most important thing, but every little win needs to be celebrated.”

According to Mike, plans are underway for a fundraiser to help the family of Nick and his expenses and also give Lindsay to stay home and help his recovery time after he left the hospital. Loeb, a UF senior, has now completed 123 dives and frequents Skydive Palatka, where she currently works, almost every weekend. Loeb has been involved in the sport for 2½ years and recommends it to everyone.

“It’s still awesome, but it’s not as ‘oh, my God’ crazy anymore,” Loeb said. Those who jump for the first time almost always do a tandem dive, where they are strapped to a professional. Tandem masters are required to have more than three years’ experience and 500 jumps to qualify.

“It’s actually a lot safer than you think it would be,” Loeb said. Melissa Garcia, vice president of advertising for the club, said she always wanted to try skydiving and committed to the sport after seeing the Falling Gators tabling in 2008.
