Singapore expects to harvest 25 per year per cent growth in the year of gross gaming revenue this year – while Macao continues to lead with a growth of 40 percent. Despite competition from Singapore and other regional destinations, Macao should not lose its luster as the destination of the playing area from above.

This is because the city has the highest concentration of casinos than anywhere else in the world, and visa restrictions for mainland tourists are more relaxed. “I think in Asia, one of the advantages that Macao has always been, even with the opening of facilities in Singapore … (is the only place in Macao) a concentration of various types … especially stations when the Cotai Strip finally built, “said Frank Fahrenkopf, CEO of the American Gaming Association.

The Cotai Strip lies on reclaimed land in Macau where Las Vegas Sands’ founder Sheldon Adelson plans to create the Las Vegas Strip of the East. Galaxy Macau recently opened there, and MGM China is bidding for a second property on the strip.

Macau just recorded another bumper crop of gaming revenues for May, jumping 42 per cent on-year, thanks to new casino openings like Galaxy Macau. Experts predict that for the full year, gaming revenues will be in excess of 40 per cent growth.

However, the gaming market is not without pitfalls. Authorities have limited the number of gaming tables in the territory to 5,500 gaming tables until 2013 – that quota is already nearly filled, restricting growth at 3 to 5 percent a year – while intense competition to bring in high-rollers has led to an unregulated market for junket operators.

“60 per cent of gross gaming revenue comes from junket operators. A few years ago when I was here, I understand that there was an agreement as to what would be charged by way commission. The question is whether or not, that’s still in play, (and) still being followed,” said Mr Fahrenkopf.

For now, the gaming tables in Macao is still full of crisps. With gambling revenues of nearly $ 13 billion over the first five months of the year, Macau seems poised to reap five times the revenue of Las Vegas Strip will generate this year.

CityCenter is a 16,797,000 square feet (1,560,500 m²) mixed-use, massive urban complex on 76 acres (31 ha) located on the Las Vegas Strip in Paradise, Nevada. The project was started by MGM Mirage; Dubai World became a joint partner during the project’s construction phase. It is the largest privately funded construction project in the history of the United States. The project straddles Harmon Avenue and is bordered by : Las Vegas Boulevard, the Monte Carlo Resort, I-15, the Bellagio, and The Cosmopolitan Towers. The site was formerly occupied by the Boardwalk Hotel and Casino, the Bellagio employee parking lot, and several standalone commercial structures. The project is connected by a people mover system. CityCenter opened on December 16, 2009 after a tumultuous endeavor to get the project completed.

General design
The conceptual master plan was designed by Ehrenkrantz, Eckstut & Kuhn Architects, laying out the project with approximately 2,400 condominium and condo-hotel units and approximately 4,800 hotel rooms, distributed within several high-rise towers around The Crystals, an ultra high-end retail and entertainment district. It is designed to have all commodities for daily life, featuring a 4,000-room hotel and casino (Aria), two 400-room boutique hotels (The Residences at Mandarin Oriental, with 227 residential condo units, and the Harmon Hotel and Spa), a purely residential offering (Veer Towers), a condo-hotel (Vdara Condo-hotel) and a 500,000 sq ft (46,000 m²) retail and entertainment district which will house the first grocery store directly on the Strip. The multi-use project makes extensive use of green technologies, such as using reclaimed water and an on-site power plant. The Mandarin Oriental, Aria, and Vdara all received LEED certification in November 2009.

With a total cost of approximately $11 billion, CityCenter is the largest privately financed development in the United States. The original cost estimate was $4 billion, but it was pushed up by rising construction costs and design changes.
